South African Counsulate General Visits.....

If you are in the {Philadelphia / Delaware area in March 2013 the Consul General of the South African Government may well be having a meeting here to show support for locals I work with on issues surrounding South Africa. I met with Mr. George Monyemangene and several Board members of a non-profit I work with called Friends of Somafco. Friends of Somafco is an organization that helps raise awareness and funds for educational and other support services for South Africa. Friends of Somafco once helped run and operate a school in South Africa and now helps a network of soup kitchens called ``Rosie's Kitchen'' for youth and elders in South Africa. {I served on their Board of Friends of Somafco for about eight years and find their integrated Board to be both delightful, courteous and professional. They are great friends. Mr. Monyemangene spoke to the Board on a host of issues today, Thursday the 15th of November, 2012, including: the tragic death of 34 striking miners caught in a dispute over wages that went bad; the environment and getting and keeping South African businesses ``GREEN''; the problems inherent in ``fraking'' in searching for ``natural gas''; building and rebuilding the South African infrastructure; education and how they are partnering with Cuba for Medical School [s] and how they want to work further to make sure that students looking for technical degrees and highly specialized degrees in fields such as math, engineering, the sciences, etc, also get social awareness and people skills; the role of China in South Africa's economy; keeping the unemployment rate down in South Africa; and other important issues of the day. Mr. Monyemangene also said that the country has faced a great deal of negative press surrounding the events at the mine, but that there was a ``full committee investigation'' that is taking place and that is expected to report back in December of this year. Mr. Monyemangene met with the Board of Friends of Somafco at the Tinley Temple Church in South Philadelphia. The ANC Representative, Mr. Godfrey Sithole, was also in attendance.... As more information from South Africa comes about I will keep you informed. I am Not a Joiner--at least of Christian Churches Right Now.....

Why I Will NOT be Joining ANY Christian Churches today or into the Near, Probably Even Far, Future…

I was going to join Bright Hope Baptist Church at 12th and Cecil B. Moore Avenue. However, after attending the New member’s Class a few days ago, I’ve decided I’ll have to let the Reverend Kevin Johnson down. I cannot join that church, even as much as I would like to. The reason is a simple one. I have to be true to my heart. And in my heart, I don’t want to take communion because I feel GOD is already in me and I am NOT into cannibalism. I know that sounds gross, but that is how I feel. Have we ever really thought about taking in the Body and Blood of ``Our Lord Jesus Christ’’ I know it is ``just symbolic’’ but symbolism is very, very powerful.

But that is just the beginning of my problems with traditional Christianity. I have already written about much of this stuff before, it is in the manuscript of my book and has been there for years. My thought have been developed a good bit more since then, but they are basically the same.

I am what is called a Polytheist. A Polytheist is a person who takes the best of LL religions, even ones He or She doesn’t know completely about, and believes in and takes hold of that, because that is what represents the Best in mankind and the best in our religious beliefs as People of the World.

I don’t believe in and can’t dedicate myself to churches that want me to believe in a variety of things that are ``unworldly’’ and ``odd’’ and ``not humanly possible’’ today—right here and now. Can anybody walk on water today—not unless the water is only an inch deep or if it is frozen like a lake in Winter. So, no I don’t believe that Jesus ever walked on water.

Can anyone, even a very special person, blessed by GOD, heal someone who is disabled, broken, diseased or very, very sick with just the touch of a hand? No, that is still impossible. Prayer may well help. SO might the healing thoughts and concerns of friends and family. Ultimately GOD will take whoever She or He wants and there isn’t much we as humans can do about that. Not much at all. This is something we have to all face up to like men and women. So no, I don’t believe Jesus made a blind man see, now do I believe he made a multitude of people eat from just a few fishes or drink enough wine for themselves from just a little wine. I just don’t believe all this.

Does this make me a fool? Does this make me an atheist? Does this make me a devil? I don’t think so. It makes me one of the most powerful kind of people who presently walk the earth. A person who questions things and asks questions about what is presented before us as reality and fact, when there is nothing holding it up and making it real. Belief is fine and good, but what can we take from religion besides faith?

I think it is vastly Important for our churches, especially Black and Progressive churches and Progressive churches from other communities such as the Latin community and or the Gay, Lesbian and even the Transgendered community to get together and face some of the realities and problems I our world together as much as possible and put our differences behind us and work towards a better world. But some of our so-called Pastors are just lining their pockets with money and saying they love the Lord and not really taking care of their flocks. It is happening all over the place. It is happening in Texas and Massachusetts. It is happening among Catholics in Cuba and North America. It is happening among Pentecostals in England and North Philadelphia. It is happening among Jewish People in New York and Muslims in the Middle East. People who profess to be the teachers of GOD’s word are turning their backs on GOD and taking bribes and money and corrupting and misrepresenting His word and not really helping the people like they should be, like Jesus intended and like it professes so much in the Bible. There are several verses in the Bible that talk about helping the poor, yet we just had a Presidential contest where the mere work ``poor’’ was abandoned almost completely for the words ``Middle Class.’’ It was like Romney and Obama were to get 50 real lashes with a real whip for even mentioning the word ``poor.’’ Yet and still more and more North Americans are becoming just that ``poor’’ because the 1 % ers continue to hold on to their money—and I’m talking about Billions and Billions of dollars--as if their very lives depended on it. Now, they may know something that I don’t know, but what I know is you can’t take it with you and the more we all learn how to dismiss greed and share, the better our world will be and the better the world’s people will be. All this is talked about in the Bible as well.

Do you know that Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, is worth some $25 Billion of Dollars? He professes to want to help the people of New York as the Mayor and he professes to want to help the people of New York solve their problems, but to me, it looks like the people of New York have been, guess what, Bamboozled, swindled and tricked again. If I had $25 Billion Dollars I would be putting it to work paying to fix our broken political and economic systems. I would be advocating for the poor and trying very, very hard to break the backs of any people {figuratively speaking} and any system that is oppressive to mankind and woman kind. I would make sure I treated the poor and the homeless people with dignity and respect. I would hire people to build bridges and roads and repair Dams, and pay for nurses, doctors, policemen, firemen, and the like. WHAT THE Heck are these people doing holding onto that kind of money when there is such great need in the world? They are tricking us into believing that when they give away one half of one percent of their money and get back a fat tax deduction and a check from the government as a tax return that they have in fact done something for humanity. They haven’t done anything for humanity. They are just further lining their pockets. They are taking the life’s blood people need to live on and hoarding it. They are maintaining the status quo and it is a status quo that is literally killing people each and every day through economic, monetary and financial strangulation and manipulation. They haven’t acted as the stellar characters the media often portrays the rich to be. NOT AT ALL!!!

There is another Church I was supposed to finally join this week. It is the Unity Fellowship Christ Church of Philadelphia at 55 North Broad Street in Philadelphia… I will attend this church on a regular basis and work with them on many, many issues if they allow a non-member to do so. But joining, even though they have a much more open policy for believers than many other churches, joining Unity Fellowship, will again, put me into a box that I just don’t fit into because my beliefs are ever changing, growing and moving forward. I can’t join that church either, because in fact, while I believe very strongly in GOD and Jesus, as I said, I’m a Polytheist. I can’t say I believe Jesus was anything but a man-- a bright, intelligent, kind and loving man who cared for others, but who couldn’t walk on water or make water into wine. A man who had faults. A man who fought temptation, but who ultimately gave his life for humanity. But there are literally millions of other lesser known men and women who gave their lives for humanity, but who barely get a scribble of credit for their efforts. Such as the 20 Million men and women who were Russian who died in World War Two; such as Malcolm X; Such as Joan of Arc; such as Che Guevara; Such as James Baldwin; such as Marlon Riggs; such as Clifford Rawlins; such as Martin Luther King Jr. … Such as Fidel Castor {who nobody wants to give proper credit to}… And there have been women too. Women who have dedicated their lives to the freedom of Black people or who have questioned our systems and or fought to make it better. Such as deceased Congresswoman Barbara Jordan; Such as the still living Angela Davis; such as the Still living Winnie Mandela; such as the deceased Harriet Tubman; such as the deceased Fannie Lou Hamer. The list goes on and on….. We can learn from all these people. They were just people who fought tierney and hatred and wanted love, respect and kindness and freedom for the Common man and the Common woman.

So this is why I’m not joining any church right now or probably ever. I have to be true to self, love self and respect my own beliefs and my own belief system. To turn everything I believe over to an alter that I don’t really believe in would be the height of hypocrisy and an indecency. And I WON’T do it!! That’s My Story and I’m sticking to it!!!

The Black Nation of Islam!!

In my humble opinion, there needs to be a change within the Nation of Islam--it is only fair to women. Some of my fondest and earliest memories are of the Nation of Islam: reading the Final Call (or Muhammad Speaks), and coming to an understanding of what happened between Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad during the early days. It would be nice to see the various factions of Black Nationalists (and by just about all accounts the Nation of Islam is our premier Black Nationalists organization) begin to create a family of leaders (both men and women) who will come together once a month to create a communication channel between the various groups—some of which don’t talk to one another and may even despise one another at this point (for whatever reason). ALL our leaders talk about Unity—this could be the first step of a healing process to create more Unity. There needs to be a change within the Nation of Islam that respects women, their issues and the long-standing gripe about the alleged indiscretions of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

Moreover, the ONLY reason I stopped eating pork was because of my belief that it is not good for you. This belief can be traced back to a 10 and 11 year-old Black boy from Philadelphia reading through the pages of the Final Call with great interest. At 14 I stopped eating swine forever. I believed and still believe that the Nation was right—on this and many other things--one should NOT take part of the pig because it is a dirty animal and not good for good health. (Elijah Muhammad has a host of informative and helpful books that can be ordered by looking through the pages of the Final Call which is available in most Big City Black neighborhoods.) But that is not the only part of my life that has been greatly influenced by and impacted on by the Nation of Islam.

During the early 1980’s the Up Town Theater in North Philadelphia was open for a brief while. During this time my mother and I went to see Minister Louis Farrakhan speak there. Of course there was a long line of Black people waiting excitedly to hear the Good and Honorable Minister speak and tell it like it is. A gentleman came up to us and asked that we step out of line. He was obviously from the Nation. I didn’t think we had done anything wrong so we went along with him. He took us to the front of the line, my mother and I, and we went through the security checkpoint and into the theater. They said thank you and for us to enjoy our afternoon with no explanation. I said to Mom that they must have selected us because Mom had graying hair and was obviously an elder. The Nation has always treated older Black people with respect, honor and grace. This is just one example of many things they do for Black people that we often take for granted everyday.

As Mom and I enjoyed the Minister’s talk, we knew we were getting an education that we could NOT get from listening to the TV or the radio, in most instances. I would never become a member of the Nation, but I have always respected them and I even sent them a $1,000.00 (One Thousand Dollar) donation once for the many positive efforts they support and spearhead in the Philadelphia area. I have bought their newspapers and bean pies and even go to their Mosque on Broad Street in Philly from time to time. But I will always remember that afternoon when they took us out of line and let us in the theater. I felt so honored that someone would treat my elderly Mom that way. .. It helped me respect her and love her even more than I already did and I thank them for that and so much more...

Over the years I have come to respect and honor Minister Louis Farrakhan, Minister Rodney Muhammad and others associated with the Black Muslims even more, in spite of the fact that they are against homosexuality and don’t elevate women within their ranks the way I would like. .. (Please note that I said ``the way I would like’’. I am only one voice and I am quite sure that there are reasons within the Nation that are far beyond my understanding as a lay person looking in from the outside.) This, however, is why the concept of Same Gender Loving people is so crucial to our at least beginning to see eye to eye enough to work together on some important issues facing the Black community such as HIV and how to be more honest about the Down Low issue and how it impacts on Black families and Black men and women. That is just to mention two issues that could be worked on by The Nation and Black Same Gender Loving people.

I recently spoke with Minister Rodney Muhammad briefly at a public event and he said they are in the process of opening a restaurant at their site on Broad Street in Philadelphia. If I had the money I would give them a grant for this project because it can only enrich and assist us as Black people in the Philadelphia vicinity. This will be a great thing because you know the food will be of good quality, fairly priced, nutritious and that the profits will be going to good causes within the Black and Muslim communities. I let the Minister know that I am in full support of him and what they are doing. I also let him know that I will be right there when they open their restaurant doors looking for some great food to purchase.

These points to the reason why we all need to have more open minds as Black people. I have some friends associated with the local Philly NAACP who would not give the time of day to the Black Nation of Islam and their leadership. This represents a closed mind. There are things that the two groups could work on together. These issues and concerns of similar interests should be sought out and we should promote our divergent groups working together on those issues—whatever they are and wherever they can. Isn’t that what real Unity is all about? Isn’t that why UNITY was made the FIRST principle and day of Kwanzaa by Doctor Maulana Karenga when Kwanzaa was founded in 1966?

At the same time, it is important to point up that some Black Nationalists have claimed that the NAACP is heavily weighted with and jinxed with Jewish money and will probably never want to work with the Black Nation of Islam for that reason. I don’t have the evidence of that, but I know the Jewish people have given money to the NAACP for years and that they helped found the NAACP. While this may be true, again, I don’t think it should preclude the two groups (the NAACP and the Nation of Islam) from working together on some issues such as: an end to police Terror and violence against the Black community; Black consumer rights; Black voter registration; support & development of Black-owned businesses; supporting the Black Arts; and so forth. The better we work together, the further we go!! The further we go the less of us have to live in squalor and discontent like the people of Haiti has to contend with right now.

There are stumbling blocks and road blocks with the Black Muslim movement that need to be discussed also. Discussing them can get you into a lot of trouble, but building bridges to true Unity, true and meaningful Black cooperation and shared economic development within our community has NEVER been easy. Unity is a linchpin issue. Just ask the remaining members of Dr. Martin Luther King’s family, Malcolm X’s family, and the family of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. The Black Muslims don’t even give lip service or try to defend some of the alleged relations that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad is supposed to have had with women outside of his major relationship when he was still alive. (Like I said this is a touchy subject with them). However, it has been over 40 years and there needs to be some movement on this issue. The problem in not looking at the development & growth of the Black Muslims; the Malcolm X controversy; the leadership of Minister Louis Farrakhan; and other issues within the Black Muslim movement honesty and openly (but within our Black community) is that we don’t and won’t heal, learn, grow and move on to a higher place unless we do. There are women, Black women, who want nothing to do with the Nation of Islam because of some of these issues. They feel any commemoration of the memory & work of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad needs to include some kind of confirmation that these things happened, but that he is, by all means, still a valued and viable Black leader and must be considered such in our history books and in the minds of Black people—including Black children... But we must heal from whatever happened in the past and move on. Letting such things fester for years is not helpful. I know that this is an extremely touchy subject among Black Muslims and may earn you a fat lip and a sore butt for speaking about them—but they need to be aired as we move onto another era in Black political awareness and as the paradigm shift that is going on in our country and world moves forward. I hope Black leaders can come together and relate on this matter and other matters that are holding us all back. Not wanting to work with one Black group or another for whatever reason is not helping, as I stated in the beginning of this section. We need to find common ground & UNITY and learn to work together where we can. Doing anything else deprives our Black community of it’s birthright of decency, pride, unity, true freedom, justice and economic stability. Each and every day I hope and pray that new lines of communication can be opened very, very soon among and between us as Black groups & as Black people. If we are about true Unity and not ego, this should not be a problem.

Editor’s Note about The Honorable Elijah Muhammad: It was pointed out at a recent meeting commemorating the work, times and memory of the late Black leader Elijah Muhammad that he saved more Black men from illegal drugs and helped clean up more Black men than the entire United States Federal government was able to do. This almost certainly true statement was made at an event held in 2009 at the Berean Institute in North Philadelphia as a gentleman quoted noted author James Baldwin, who had made the observation. This assistance to Black men was and continues to be given through many avenues including the one Malcolm X came through—within our prison system. Many, many thousands of Black men have come through the Black Muslim’s teachings to find new life, motivation, healing, direction and meaning as they move forward with their lives.

I am working hard on getting my book published. ``Flight'' : Adventures in Healing

I never thought I would hear so many moans about a Denzel Washington movie. But, while people seemed to enjoy His new film, they also got a lesson--like with most of Denzel's Films.  This time, however, people weren't as openly receptive because the shoe fit, as it were, with many people.

 ``Flight'' traces the high-flying adventures of a career alcoholic who is also an airline pilot--a problem that often goes undetected by our flight system regulators as the situation presently stands.  I was highly impressed and quite motivated to tackle my own additions to food and pornography after seeing Denzel's character ``finally tell the truth'' to federal airline regulators during an eventful formal hearing in the movie. 

 We, in North American culture, have become a culture of addiction.  Many people, like me, for example, have more than one addiction.  Redefining and turning one's life around to fit a more sane mold can be difficult and or down right impossible without some sort of consistent psychiatric intervention.  Such intervention was not only frowned upon by Denzel, in this movie, it was openly rejected and fought against--even as his family life continued to fall apart. As his new girlfriend takes FLIGHT, as it were, and leaves him,  he slowly realizes he has a problem that is going to take more than just Him to decipher, tackle and overcome. When He gets the help he needs--and deserves-- His life takes a positive turn...

 This film hit home with many, many audience members who were probably dealing, in one way or another, with the various addictions of modern day life in North America.  If I need to mention some of them I will. Maybe it will be a mirror for your own healing. Some, and I mean only some, of the addictions we are faced with as North Americans include: illegal and prescription Drug addiction; food addictions; shopping and clothing addictions; sex addictions; addictions to pornography {Which I have, but which I have managed to justify by working towards healthier, safer images in porn}; other spending addictions such as gambling and spending money we don't have; spousal abuse, bullying and ``throwing one's weight around politically'' can also be an addiction {I am personally guilty of the ``throwing my weight around politically'' aspect here, which can help alienate you from people who would otherwise like to care about you and reach out}; church and religion addictions; an addiction to unrealistic expectations when you haven't done your homework and paid your dues; an addiction to liking or being attracted to people who are too young for you as sexual ``targets'' / or possible partners {This is most likely also a problem I have and have barely touched on even after 30 plus years of therapy}; Alcohol addictions--as addressed in ``Flight''.  When we own up to these addictions, we begin a fantastic healing process that will last a lifetime

I didn’t used to be so partisan and was often ready and willing to sit and talk peace and compromise with more conservative elements in Independent Parties and among the Republicans, but now ALL I see and hear on TV is how they won’t budge on this or that issue. I’m tired and I’m ready to put on my Boxer Gloves as well!!!! The Tee-Party and the Right Wing among the Republicans have effectively pulled the wool over our eyes so many times, we Progressives have been in a tail spin and unable to see things clearly.

This letter is going to be a short one. There are two things I want you to think about. First I want you to promise you will share this letter with Performer Barbra Streisand because she has connections with the elite Progressive forces out there in California. This is very important, as you will determine for yourself shortly after you receive this letter.

Second I want you to consider two issues that are very important in regards to equal treatment and fairness for people and groups of people who still largely feel left OUT of the political process in this Great Nation of ours. 1) When I talk about how we have had the wool pulled over our eyes, there is no better example than who sits on the Supreme Court right now and professes to, in some strange, twisted and quirky fashion, represent Black people. This is about some Real Wool!! Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas does NOT Represent Black people!! He represents the Status Quo and the rich and the Republicans just like the President who put him into office, Mr. George H.W. Bush the First. We, as Black voters have done without any Black representation on the Supreme Court since Thurgood Marshall left the High Court in October, 1991. {Information from the Philadelphia Free Library}.. Since then, there has been no effective voice for our issues and concerns as an oppressed group of voters, so our concerns, such as: Day Care; Affirmative Action; Anti-Discrimination Laws; Reasonable Gun Laws; Women’s Rights; Welfare Rights; The Rights of Workers; The Rights of Prisoners,; and against the Death Penalty, etc. have had to be championed by other ethnic groups on the court or just go un-heard. This is an egregious miscarriage of Justice and something that desperately needs to be addressed by our thinking Progressive politicians and the President, when he gets re-elected tomorrow. This can all be resolved by finally putting a qualified Black woman on the Supreme Court in place of the next person who leaves. This will be controversial, but I need you to take up this banner. There are hundreds of thousands of Black voters in California who I think have had the wool pulled on them as well, and I want you to help inform them about this single issue, as you go around and ask for support for other positive and progressive legislation. Something tells me I have written the correct person here and that you will take up this cause.

The other thing I want to talk to you about is implementing a ten-year term limit on Supreme Court Justices. I feel this would help to institute a greater degree of democracy and fairness in our Social/political process. As it is, with Supreme Court Justices having an unending term—{or at least only ending when the Justices are ready to leave} leaves the court open to political manipulation that is totally out of kilter with the political beliefs and political realities that are reflected in our society at any particular given time.

I want to know what has to take place to institute a 10-year limit on Supreme Court Justice Terms. Is it an Act of Congress that needs to be ratified by three fifths of the States?; Is it a Presidential decree?; Is it a Congressional / Senate vote?; Or is it thousands of signed and sealed petitions from ordinary American citizens? I need to know as soon as possible, and I need to know because it is one of many things I plan to dedicate many years of my future time on this planet to. This one new law will restore a great deal of confidence in our process and I feel it is THAT important. If we can get this Supreme Court Term Limit, we will ALL see our political beliefs reflected more accurately by the High Court—regardless of if we are conservative or liberal, Progressive or TEE.
