what Black family needs to know about budgeting and food costs....................

An Open Letter To The Black Community…

RE: Where Did All the Money Go?

Have you as a Black Parent ever wondered where all the household funds are going? Do you often have the sinking feeling that your children are just there to act as a vacuum cleaner [s] for Five Dollar Bills and One Dollar Bills?

This short article is designed to let you know where some of the money you give your children goes ad how it is spent. If you read onward, you will also learn how to stem some of the flow of money and turn that might financial river around and put some of those dollars back into the household and back into your pocket.

If you are a typical Low to Middle-income household in the inner city—Black family with either 2.3 children and either one parent, two parents or a guardian watching the children such as a grandparent—the children probably goes to the corner store or the neighborhood store about two or three times a week.

The typical things they might buy will include: A 16 Oz. Pepsi soda [$1.50.]; Herrs BBQ Potato Chips [Large Bag for $4.29 each]; A cheese and turkey Hoagie—[$7.49 each]; three cream-filled cupcakes from Tasty cake or Drake [one pack of 3 is $1.69]; A small bag of powered-sugar donuts [$4.78 a bag]; Tasty Cake Pie [$1.]on special.

That sounds like a lot of food for one setting, but taken over a week, a month, or a year and you get to relate to just how much this food, often called junk food, is costing the average American Black Family. If you have two or three children you can multiply some of these amounts by two or three [I will do this for you.]

An average male or female in the 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th grade has plenty of money for snacks before and especially after school. [Now some of that money they get hold of themselves and make it honestly at a job or by doing work around the house and getting an allowance. This is where the family discussion of good and proper values comes in. One value we all need to teach our children, nieces, nephews, young cousins and grandchildren, etc., is NOT to eat so much junk food!!! But we need to come to them with facts and statistics about high blood pressure when they get older; about heart ailments when they get older; and about obesity they may be dealing with right now or when they get a bit older. This is crucial and we have to explain to our young ones the importance of listening. We also need to take the time to listen to them as well and write a hand written or typed letter to our pastors about good and better foods and nutrition and how we think our churches can help in this process. This is important and can be worked into the day late at night before you go to bed or really early in the morning before you go to work. If you don’t think this is important, just read some of the facts and figures on nutrition in the Black community and you will see what I’m talking about.

``On the Flip side, fat in the midsection is usually quite responsive to diet and exercise, and losing weight reverses the health risks,’’ from Ebony Magazine, January 1990.

I have literally seen at least one youngster with a $50. Bill and I have seen plenty of $20. Bills; $10. Bills and $5. Bills. A typical male or female child or youth might buy a hoagie, two bags of chips, or one large bag, and a soda at least twice a week. Each trip to the corner store for those three items Will cost about $13.28!! Twice a week, That’s $26,56 a week. Over a month That’s $106.24 if your child goes and gets those items… Twice a week for a month, over a year time that’s $1,274.88—One Thousand, Two Hundred and Seventy Four Dollars and Eighty Eight cents a year!! That is just for one child or youth over one year. [If You have two children or young people around the house, that’s $2,549.76.]

Money shortages in Poor or even Middle-income Black households is at the apex of the reasons for arguments, conflicts and disagreements between parents, guardians and grandparents and children, teen or young adults. There just never seems to be enough money, especially during the hard times of high unemployment and the flood of foreign-made goods [including large and expensive items such as cars] coming into the U.S. economy that we are currently faced with.

Many heads of Poor Black Families think if they could just win the lottery or get that windfall or make a big gain in some other way, such as a stock option, they would really be living the high life. Everything would be fine.

But the control is actually in the parents and the children’s hands each week or every other week or every month when the get paid and the money comes in.

The Parent—with a little knowledge and community or church education—can make some badly-needed change that can have a significant, lasting, and positive impact on Black families and eventually whole Black Communities!!!

If a parent; grandparent or guardian sits down with the children He or She has responsibility for the parent can take the positive opportunity to take Positive action and change the situation. Parents can put the fattening hoagies, chips and sodas down and make other choices. Such foods as sodas, cakes and hoagies are not healthy at all and have real and present links to diabetes, obesity heart disease and high blood pressure. They contain a high level of unhealthy saturated fat, salt, sugar and corn syrup—all foods and chemicals linked to health difficulties. Coupled with a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of positive physical activity such as exercise, this becomes a great danger to our Black Families.

A grandparent, Mom or Dad can help the child or youngster by instructing them to take slices of cucumber, celery, radishes and carrots to school in a plastic container. The child can take a small container of hummus or Balsamic vinegar to school with the fresh vegetables and have a really healthy snack instead of all that fat, salt and sugar that can threaten life lines, especially later in life. The child can take a bottle of Spring Water pre-bought from the super market or just cool tap water. This will save more than half that $1,274.99 a year!!

hoggies eat people.........................................................................

I was in a supermarket / restaurant today [2-25-2014] and there was a woman near me eating who was as big as a cathedral. She was ``normal'' but seriously over weight. I quickly realized, having an over-eating problem myself, that she had a mental problem. It is a mental problem unlike child sexual abuse, rape or murder, that we have comfortably come to accept in this age of the ham hoggie with extra mayonnaise and cheese and the double-stuffed meat burgers and double-stuffed orieo's. We can go to almost any burger shop and ask for a Triple-Decker cheese burger with beacon and no one bats an eye. Such comfortable self-abuse is costing the North American Health Care system and the Health Care Providers-- and those of us lucky enough to have some form of health care--literally thousands of dollars in extra testing, care and treatment for heart disease, diabeties, high-blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks and other obesity-related costs. We must take the advice of people like Doctor Ian Smith and Doctor OZ [include their books here] and work 1/2 hour of exercise into our daily routine with each passing day. I guess, in our so-called Free democracy a requirement of less fat in sandwiches and wheat breads and less fattening cheese, less fattening bacon like turkey bacon and turkey burger patties or Veggie Pattie burgers--we can't make such things a requirement in our so-called free and open society [unless we can prove through the court system that such fattening items are a real threat to society]--but certainly we can demand that MacDonald's give us such options and choices if we are sane people and want to have some decency and honor about ourselves and honor our holy Temple--The Human BOdy each of us was given...

The cost of eating so much meat in our culture and our society like the huge Black lady I saw recently at 40th and Walnut Street stuffing a hoggie down her face--I wondered if the hoggie was eating her or was she eating the hoggie--this overeating also has costs in terms of our environment. It cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars more per year to produce cows, chickens--if that is what they really are, and this is questionable--poultry and goats than it does to produce tofu, wheat gluten, seatan, tempet, vegetables, and fruits.

Where do our food producers, with an ever-increasing inability to feed our growing world, think three meals with so much meat-- snacks, lunch, another snack, for example--where is all the water going to come from to feed and raise the bairly-live stock to produce such amounts of meat going to come from? It takes gallons and gallons less water to produce a 100 LB's of fruit or vegetables or tofu than it does 100 LB's of fried chicken, baked chicken, or even baked fish like the very popular and omega 3-filled Salmon many Black Families dine on [which is really good and great for us. It takes gallons and gallons less water--a vitally important limited resource, especially in parched, dry areas like Israel and California--to produce tofu than it does to produce goat meat or lamb meat. It takes hundreds less gallons of water and shorter gestation and farm-to-table periods to produce fresh vegetable and fruits like peaches, blueberries, varieties of lettus [such as arugula and radicchio], blackberries, star fruit, eggplant, onions, broccoli, oranges, bananas, mint, new potatoes [the purple or red variety--which are a bit better for you], yams, sweet potatoes, and pineapples than it does to produce the meats I mentioned earlier in this article.

Water is a valuable resource that we totally take for granted. We use it from sun up to sun down. When we shave in the morning and brush our teeth and flush the bath in the morning to when we take a needed shower at night with plenty of wonderful olive soap or mango soap from the Black soap company and BLack Shampoo from 2nd Chance Thrift Shop at 45th and Locust Street and the Afro Centric Shop at 221 South 52nd Street in West Philadelphia at 52nd and Locust across from the Historic BushFire Theater. We take the water we are using for a shower for granted, but we are lucky to have water seemingly all over the place in the United States of Native America. It is in the supermarkets--fresh and inexpensive--and clean and drinkable our of the spicket and right there for a shower--one of which I took today....

Some European counties and the Western most part of our country have to take this information into consideration as we use water in London, Los Angeles and Sacramento. That GOD gave us water and He can take it away if we don't come to terms with the facts in this article and many others that talk even more critically about wasting water and not taking it for granted. We can't afford to walk through life unaware of what we do with every precious drop of water and every precious bit of good food--that is if we have gotten wise to eating good foot at this point. We must wake up to what realities really are and read books like ...

The Suggested book: ``Cooking Light: Way to Cook Vegetarian: The Complete Visual Guide to Meatless Cookiing'' From Time Home Entertainment, was a resource for producing this article ans has been helpful in my adding more fruits and vegetables to my own personal diet.

This article is not yet finished and will require editing. It is written after having read a recipe or two from the ``Vegetarian Times'' magazine, which I subscribe to and strongly suggest to readers.

about mickie dees...

Dear Good Brothers and Sisters: I have volunteered to help the MOVE Organization in the PHILADELPHIA area to act on a boycott of McDonald's. I know what you are going to say: Why McDonald's? There are plenty of other criminals selling us fast food that is killing us as well!!! This is true, but in the successful movements, you have to target your points and fine tune your message. You can't go after everybody. The reasons why we have selected McDonald's is that:
* McDonald's is really harming and victimizing animals in the way they kill stock for meat for burgers.
* McDonald's is very intransigent in the way they don't respond positively to customer complaints and suggestions about new products that are less fatty, salty, sugary, dangerous, and filled with pesticides. There are easy alternatives, but McDonald's keeps pumping out the same old stuff that is killing our people with High Blood Pressure; Heart Disease; Sugar Diabetes; Cancer and on and on. It is time to take a stand.
* McDonald's is responsible for on average of about 6 % of ALL the trash in the Whole Northern United States. They need to use less paper in their packaging and more environmentally purposeful packaging to lessen trash and the multitudes of trash that they are spreading across our Nation and the world.
* We also chose McDonald's because they are such an open target and because they are ALL OVER THE WORLD!!! They have a waiting line to get a franchise and it still cost over a million dollars to wreak this havoc on the people. It has to end and they need to be dragged, kicking and screaming if need be, into the future... A future that is more humane, decent, loving, kind, receptive, respectful, understanding and able to care for people instead of just seeing people as open wallets to be exploited.
* The MOVIE``Super Sizer Me'' really points out the health risks of eating at McDonald's on a regular basis. The director of the film eats at McDonald's for a period of time and finds his health going South steadily. { his liver practically turns to jelly} The film is a documentation about the real health risks of eating Double Quarter Pounders; Greasy fries; milk shakes; cokes; greasy piece-meal fish sandwiches covered with tarter sauce; sugary cookies and other items that Black, Latin and Poor White families across the Nation are stuffing down their children. IT HAS TO STOP SOMEWHERE!!!
* One Last Note: A Lot of People didn’t notice when the University of Pennsylvania Hospital closed the MacDonalds at Children’s Hospital. We DID!!!.... This proves that the food is NOT suitable for children who are trying to get better in the HOSPITAL—WHY IS IT EVER USEFUL OR HEALTHFUL AT ALL IF IT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF PENN HOSPITAL’S CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL COMPLEX?????
Please send this rational for the boycott of McDonald's to as many people as you wish and have them write me at: BLockBoi75@Yahoo.Com
If you want to read other articles by me as an activist and writer, please look up Brother Tracy Gibson under GOOGLE and look under ``The Politics of Real'' under their Blogg information.
Thank you and please stay in touch.....

If you want to write McDonalds: Please do so at: The McDonalds Corporation

Write about how they need to change their food choices and make suggestions as to what they should sell to improve their menue.

A Real, Authentic Black Man—An Indigenous Black Man…

Your sandals are like the ones Jesus Christ wore…

Your hair is locked, or perfectly braded by your woman or your man…

Your hands are worn from the heat and toil of working in the fields…

Your brow is wet with the honest result of toil…

Your ancestors sprang from the Nile Valley as they overlooked the Dynasty, the Empire of Ancient Africa they had created…

You are now ALL OVER THE WORLD..

From Egypt to Chad to Gibbon to Atlanta to Kenya to Philadelphia…

You are there and have seen it all…

You are a Christ Child…a MASTER of men…

A man who owns time itself… But you don’t Lord over other men and women…

You are the Indigenous one—not the invader…

You are the essence of LOVe And Respect for humanity…

Your rugged feet walked through Nazareth and Bethlehem

Your ancestor’s eyes were cast into the sky to create the SUN And the STARS…

You are an ancient African man and

As you walk through the City of New York, the perfect mix of

The Ancient and the Contemporary, few Europeans understand the dimensions of your existence among them…

Frankly, you are superior…

You have come from dirt and dust to once again rule the world…

You are a champion of fairness, justice and righteousness among men who plunder and hate….

You are an African Emperor in a pin striped suit

READY FOR THE WORLD…….AND Still,

You are NOT, allowed to be the hero and romantic lead because the mere vision of you shapes thought, time and response ….

But let’s be clear, if you are not a large part of the shaping of the New World, there will be NO NEW WORLD…

and we got brains to.

Mayor Michael Nutter
Room 215, City Hall
Broad & Market Str
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  19107

Dear Respected Mayor:

Good Morning!! I am interested in finding out how to go about honestly getting consulting contracts with the City of Philadelphia without ``asking for political favors'' or ``pulling strings that pull back.''  The businesses I hold including:  The Black Millionaire's Network--a subsidiary of my parent company dedicated to building a network across our Nation that will teach better personal business habits, better Ways to effectively handle, save and spend money, and ways to turn cash into property ownership, and also suggest a reading list along with other components leading towards successfully SPENDING MONEY IN A POSITIVE AND PRODUCTIVE MANNER.... Brother Tracy Gibson & Associates, Inc. [BTGAndA] is the parent company dedicated to working in research, education, business development, Public Relations and philanthropy. BTGAndA has the mission of stabilizing Black males, Black children and entire Black families. I am also working to build a non-profit I call The Coalition for Peace and Justice in the Middle East. I have written the city before about this important matter, but haven't gotten a concrete answer that I was able to follow up on as yet. My business is interested in doing research, education, advocacy, public relations & philanthropic work with & for the City of Philadelphia.

I have been a Philadelphia resident most of my 57 years. I am a Black Gay man who LOVes People--ALL types of people.... I am a disabled worker [bipolar with schizophrenic features] but have been doing quite well emotionally for the last 13 years. I have NOT had to be hospitalized for mental illness since that time.  I have been constructing a multinational corporation for the last 12 years, but we are still not financially solvent as far as I know. I have great ambitions of hiring plenty of workers from divergent backgrounds, especially Black People, here in the Philadelphia area.  I give a special designation towards Black People because we all know of the disenfranchisement this particular group of People have suffered from. Black People have been left out of the city unions, middle level executive jobs and the top jobs for decades and have been losing property at a very real pace.  But this picture can change over time with help from a Progressive City Government, working People, middle-income People, our religious, civic and community leaders and local People of great wealth who want to see real justice and real sharing take place in Philadelphia. My feeling is that all boats must be lifted and that no one should have to suffer economically. I feel Philadelphia is in a prime position and in a prime space in time for a more progressive future to begin right in our lifetimes—right NOW!! I have said we should consider ourselves the Education City because New York is the finance City and Washington is the Center of Government.  We need an identity. A strong, positive identity!!  [I have written you about this before.] Such work--advocacy, research & education--is part of what I dedicate my life to. I work about 10 hours a day and I mean business.  But not just business for the rich and wealthy, but I mean and work towards inclusion for everybody. Prosperity for everybody. And decency for everybody.  This can happen over time and with little fanfare and disruption if more cooperation takes place and if more people listen to each other instead of just judge each other, grow impatient and continue to be left out of the winner's circle...  IT IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT TO LISTEN TO QUALIFIED LEADERS, BUT ALWAYS HAVE A QUESTIONING MIND!! My Beloved Parents--Mr. Charles Saint Clair Gibson and Mrs. Jessie Mae Gibson (both deceased) taught me that we should be fair to everyone and seek justice, inclusion and fairness for everyone. This is why I have started a corporation called Brother Tracy Gibson & Associates, Inc. and one of the Subsidiaries, The Black Millionaire’s Network.  The Parent company, Brother Tracy Gibson& Associates, Inc., is a growing for-profit concern that does Public Relations, Education,  Advertising, Community Advocacy, Philanthropy & Research.  Some of the things we have achieved over the last few years include: starting a process to work towards and advocate towards more Black youth and Black People effectively getting in the construction trade and housing redevelopment work. As Black People, we have been blocked out of housing boom after housing boom. Some of us are ``allowed'' to buy property, but many of us end up losing our property to foreclosure [as I did]  or never profiting the way we should or the way that has been promised to us by so many ``housing hucksters and housing experts''. I have written the First Lady about how to ethically buy property and expand our property base as Black neighborhood people and Black indigenous People and expand on business ownership without causing gentrification and all the problems that start when that hideous process takes place... I have advocated for a Black Construction worker's, Black Trades men's, Black Trades women's and Black Contractor's Union to be formulated & organized to help us effectively work towards getting more  contracting work throughout the City of Philadelphia. This will especially help younger workers coming into the Construction business who are eager to learn and want to make a good wage.  I have also Helped successfully advocate for the Kimmel Center to hold free concerts for the public [They had at least three free Jazz concerts just two months ago [April, 2014]; and I have taken a position for an elected School Board in Philadelphia [I’ll be calling Jannie Blackwell, my city Council Representative, about this issue very soon. If I am not mistaken, she has advocated for an elected School Board here.]. I have also worked on getting the Barns Foundation to establish better, more honest relations with the Black Community [The Barns Foundation was broadly criticized for the way they took over much of their art collection which, I believe, was left in Black hands at a major Black educational institution before the controversy started that ended up in the Barns Foundation getting control of the valuable art work they now display at 23rd and The Benjamin Franklin Parkway, as their own.]. I have written the Queen of England and several celebrities through my blog to coax the City of Philadelphia [and The Royal Family of England] to hold a major charitable concert here in honor of The Royal Family and the many charities they will be helping raise money for, including OxFam America and The United Negro College Fund. The money would be used to stem some of the long-term problems that plague many African countries as well as for local charitable organizations.  [I was trained by a major Fund Raising expert who held a day-long seminar at the Philadelphia Foundation in the 1990's]. I have also worked to get the State of Israel and some of the major Arab countries to sit down and not only talk through the same old channels, but listen to ``other voices’’ and more Grass-Roots interests, some of which were  formerly blocked out of the discussion such as Black People from the Grass-Roots, Progressive Jewish People, legitimate Palestinian groups and Progressive Jewish Peace Activists from Israel .  The organization I have formulated to work on this issue—The Coalition for Peace and Justice in the Middle East, exists only in theory and on paper, but I have or will have written both Black, Arab and Jewish groups to let them know there are other voices that need to be heard on this seemingly complex matter.  The Coalition for Peace and Justice in the Middle East is perceived to be a voice for those left out of the discussion such as youth and young people, Native Americans, East Indians, indigenous Africans, and other ethnic groups--not just Black People, Jewish People and Arab People--as well as the disabled & Gay and Lesbian groups. It will take on wings, as soon as I’m able to get proper funding for this important and vital work.  I perceive this particular organization to be a non-profit organization and I don’t want it to have one voice or one point of view. I want all sides to be heard equally.  I personally think there are too many people from the Academy, heavy thinkers, writers, news people, established news media corporations and established media personalities, politicians and career diplomats taking on far too much weight & water in trying to make positive changes for the better in the Middle East region.  There is a definite need for other voices of different groups to bring clarity and decency to an issue that has been muddled over the years with too much undue influence from traditional sources of money and power.  With the world consistently on the brink, as it were, because of what goes on in this region, we need to take our work here very seriously. The need for funding here is real and at hand, as are the great & positive possibilities of what we will achieve.  I have also worked on prisoner-rights issues and advocated for condom use in the prison system to stem much of the rise in HIV & AIDS in the Black and Latin community. I have also advocated for a system where those incarcerated are allowed more rights, library and food privileges, and freedoms as they exhibit good behavior and cooperate in their own defense while not causing undue difficulties & disruptions especially while incarcerated. While in the prison system, or while on parole or during other parts of the ``prison pipeline'' phenomena, many young Black men, are caught up in not getting the chances and opportunities they need to move forward.  Good or excellent behavior should be judged adequately and people--regardless of age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, race, skin color, etc., should be rewarded for their efforts to help others and to not cause undue disruptions while in the ``prison pipeline''.. This need to behave well and be rewarded needs to ring true even while those incarcerated are standing up for their rights as human beings.  There are a host of other issues I have worked on, researched and advocated for over the years including most recently, working for fair treatment and decency for homeless people, the poor and people who HAVE TO eat at Church missions. The rights of Black Gays and Lesbians have also been a priority for me as I attend a Gay friendly mostly Black church called Unity Fellowship Christ Church of Philadelphia, and advocate for their getting a new building and meeting space.  I have also worked against racism, WhITe Supremacy and the concentration of power among the wealthy. This is why, in my latest Newsletter --Truth Be Told--I advocated for a qualified Black woman to be named to the Supreme Court [no Black woman has ever been given such an honor before in the history of the United States.]. I have also come out for 10-year-term-limits on Supreme Court Justices and will research and educate the public on this important issue as soon as I find out how such a behemoth process takes place successfully.
I was educated at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio where I received a BS Degree in Public Relations with a Black Studies minor in August of 1978. I have studied finance recently at the Wharton School's free education program for the community where I received two certificates within the last year. While living in New Castle, Delaware--for about five years--I took seminars at the Money School while I worked on a 636-page manuscript dedicated towards building better values for Black youth and giving them guidance, encouragement, and direction.  I have also taken a class at the Temple Small Business Development Center and most recently a class in Social Media Marketing at the University of the Arts [May 17, 2014] on Broad Street... I hope you will contact me when and if you find me qualified to be a consultant for the City of Philadelphia.

Peace and Blessings,

Brother Tracy Gibson; Disabled Worker; Future Philanthropist; Businessman.
