WHITNEY HOUSTON...

Whitney Houston…

When I saw the movie ``The Body Guard’’ (a Mick Jackson film from 1992) I knew she could not only sing and act, but that she had a relatively good perception of what a good role was for her. Some actors are quite talented, but can’t choose and pick roles very well.

``I Will Always Love You,’’ was a hit song from the film and there were many others. Kevin Costner starred with Whitney in the movie and the film was a big hit with American and foreign audiences alike.

But Ms. Houston was living a lie in her professional life. She was alleged to be doing serious illegal drugs with her thug-life husband Bobby Brown. They were living quite close on the edge. No one, not even her Mother Sissy Houston, a fabulous singer in her own right, seemed to be able to pull Whitney away from what was perceived to be the influence of this man. Bobby was alleged to have abused and tormented her... It seemed to the public that the more pain she went through the more she liked it. She just kept clinging to Bobby and the marriage…

But the truth was (from this distant observer) that she was a large part of the problem. She liked the thug in Bobby and seemed to actually stimulate and support his Bad Boy behavior.

Bobby is alleged to have been a womanizer, but the couple did have a child together. There were all sorts of rumors about them in the tabloids and the Main Stream press...

Somehow Whitney lived through this and got off the drugs. She also got away from Bobby who Whitney says actually spit in her face at one point. (Now that is no way for a Black, famous heterosexual couple to treat one another.!!)

Low and behold, with the help of her ``savior’’ Christ Jesus, she was able to bring herself out of the dead-end relationship and all the drugs and re-start her career. Her new Album ``I Look To You.’’ (or CD if you will) is a hit and her career is back on track… I remember almost staying up at night with worry about Ms. Houston because I always thought she was a beautiful Black woman and I had heard that she had given back to the Black community very generously, even with all that she was going through… I prayed for GOD to save her…

I wish her well and nothing but happiness with her new career. I am prayerful that she will make more movies because she was also excellent in ``Waiting to Exhale.’’ I think she could get hold of a good script and really do justice to bringing out new nuances and depth about what Black women are really like.
